These days, it is easy for a person to come across movies and music that portray police officers in a negative manner.
It is no secret that there are a large portion of people who hold malice in their hearts towards police officers.
Where the police service is concerned, I believe that there are good officers within the service who are trustworthy, honest and are willing to do their job in an honourable manner.
And then there are crooked police officers who are in the same league as the criminals; they are obviously a disgrace to the service, because they stand for injustice.
There are countless people who tend to focus on the negativity that is taking place within the police service.
Then there are those people who without a doubt are cognizant of the positive things that are being done by the members of the police service (I think that it is unfair for the entire police service to be tarnished because of rogue elements within its organisation).
Hey, after all, police officers are human beings just like you and I; people ought to treat them with respect, because all human beings deserve respect and that respect is not blindly bestowed because they are officers of the law.
During my childhood, I had peers who invited the thought of being police officers.
Today, how many young children would like to be police officers when they grow up? I have a strong feeling that the number of children who wished to be police officers were larger in number yesteryear.
However, if the police service were highly successful at cleaning up the figurative mess within their own fraternity, a lot of people would regain their faith in them.
I got pulled over the other day and I was surprised my legs weren’t shaking and my heart pounding. I put the car in park, rolled down the window and greeted him with a warm smile and a ‘Good Morning Officer.’ He smiled back and was as nice as he could be giving me a ticket for an expired inspection sticker followed up by a “Get back to me with the new inspection papers in 14 days and I’ll wipe it clear”. A lot of the animosity begins I believe by how we first present ourselves. Are we open and kind or closed off and fearful. Granted the militarization of Amerika has created this fear and loathing and crooked cops have left us with a sense of betrayal which we must get past. Perhaps if we greeted these guys more with kindness and understanding they would begin to feel more like protecting us….VK
